Assassins, Leone lead the winners in Suncoast eventBy PHIL GULICK© St. Petersburg Times published February 28, 2003 The Assassins captured the team title and Jason Leone's 855 handicap series won the singles crown as the Suncoast Association City Tournament ended last weekend at Countryside Lanes. The Assassins fired a 3,119 two weekends ago in the opening rounds and survived last weekend's onslaught. The Clearwater CATS took second with a 3,106 pinfall, bouncing Locked & Loaded to third (3,064) and the Bums to fourth (2,962). The winning squad was comprised of Pat Klotchko, Dianna Mooneyhan, John Gesell and Barb Hendricks. Pinellas Park's Brian Korcak came within four pins of unseating Leone of his singles championship, firing an 289-852 series for second. Walter Yasensky's 831 was third, knocking Wayne Elliott and Phillip Peters into fourth and fifth place, respectively. Palm Harbor's Richard Dornan and Yasensky captured the doubles title with a 1,649 pinfall. They dropped Largo's Jonathan Campos and Louis Crispiano to second. Campos nailed a 298 game. New Port Richey's Roy Hancock and Dann Sellers rolled a 1,565 for third, turning back Andrew Rygiel and Leigh Kinseher. Stephen Kenyon recorded a 300 but finished 43rd in singles. Peters had a 290 in doubles. The tourney, directed by Ron Averbeck, attracted 36 teams. ABC UPDATE: Atlanta's Tony Harvey rolled his 20th career perfect game last week, the first of the 100th annual ABC National Championships Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Supreme Deck, Livonia, Mich., remains the Regular Division leader at 3,134. Whitlow Furnace & Duct, Scobey, Mont., heads the Classified Division with a 2,797 pinfall. The Classified Division is for teams with a 900 collective average or less, doubles with a combined average of 360 or less and singles and all-events for bowlers with a 180 average or less. The Regular classes require squad and individual averages to be above Classified. James Thomas and Jeffery Ripic, Johnson City, N.Y., are the Regular Division doubles leaders at 1,402. Shawn Thielen, Cold Spring, Minn., is the singles front-runner with a 796 series. Keith and Steve Petrie, Long Prairie, Minn., head the Classified doubles with a 1,215 pinfall. Joseph Britton, Eagle, Mich., tops the singles with a 657 series. For updated results, go online to www.abctournament.com. The tourney ends June 22. -- SMO: March 14 is the target date for delegates of the ABC national convention in Knoxville to vote on the proposed Single Membership Organization. Much work has gone into the proposed merger of the ABC, WIBC, YABA and USA Bowling in the past two years. If approved, the new organization will be known as the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). The WIBC delegates will vote on the proposal April 29 at their national convention in Reno, Nev. First, though, they must rescind action taken last year that seeks to delay the final vote until 2004. Two-thirds of the ABC or WIBC delegates must approve the proposal for their organizations to accept it. Because the YABA and USA Bowling have given their approval, the merger can occur if the ABC or WIBC delegations vote for it. USBC maximum allowable dues will be $10 national, $1 state and $10 local through the transition period ending July 31, 2007. However, current national dues ($8 ABC, $8 WIBC, $8.50 YABA) will remain the same for at least the 2003-04 season. State and local association dues will stay the same until the merger is completed in their areas.
