Broadway musicians voted Saturday to give their union authority to call a strike if necessary against theater producers, a walkout that would affect virtually every musical on Broadway.

Talks between Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians and the League of American Theatres and Producers will continue today.

The vote gives the union's negotiating committee authority to call a walkout if the committee thinks it necessary. The contract expires at midnight today.

Last Monday, casts began rehearsing with computer-generated virtual orchestras which producers vow to use if the musicians walk out.

Channing getting married

Carol Channing is getting married again -- to her childhood sweetheart from 70 years ago.

The 82-year-old singer-actor said Harry Kullijian, with whom she grew up in San Francisco, tracked her down after reading her memoirs. Kullijian, 82, had been trying to reach her for 60 years, she said.

"Since our spouses have both passed away, we were able to get together again, renew our love, and would like to announce our engagement," Channing said Thursday.
