TAMPA -- All along, the Bucs have had interest in bringing back either Shaun King or Rob Johnson, the backup quarterbacks who became free agents on Friday.
But Johnson, 29, took himself out of consideration Sunday when he reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with the Redskins worth about $1-million a year. The Redskins outbid the Cowboys.
Johnson's decision could have an effect on negotiations between the Bucs and King's agent, Eugene Parker.
King, who would like to return to the Bucs, said Friday the team told him it wanted him back. Believed to be on the Bears' coveted list, King, 25, is scheduled to return to Tampa from vacation over the next two days and said he has no visits planned early this week.
GM Rich McKay has said he would like to sign a third playcaller to join starter Brad Johnson and recently acquired free agent Greg Zolman by the time quarterback orientation begins March 17.
Known for his willingness to change struggling quarterbacks during the season, coach Steve Spurrier likely signed Johnson to push starter Patrick Ramsey, who is entering his second season.
The Redskins also have former starters Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel on the roster, but neither is expected to be back.
The Redskins also signed former Jets kicker John Hall and have added seven players since the free-agent market opened Friday.
Rob Johnson was 2-0 subbing for Brad Johnson last season and went 57-of-88 for 536 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He reunites with Redskins offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who was on the Southern Cal staff when Johnson starred there from 1991-94.
