Big (and we mean big) celebrities herald clinic's opening

A Lakeland clinic affiliated with Tampa's H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute came up with a novel way to celebrate its opening last week.

It invited a few high-profile celebrities to the festivities, starting with Louis Pasteur, Madame Curie and Mother Teresa.

Though they may not have the star-power of J Lo, the trio do have the cachet of no longer being among the living. That makes their "appearance" in 20-foot, back-lit images on the front of the center, all the more intriguing.

"We could think of no better way to celebrate the grand opening of the center than to honor these great pioneers for their significant contributions to humanity," said Dr. Randy Heysek, executive director of the new facility.

The Center for Cancer Care & Research, which is a joint venture between two Polk County doctors' groups, will house cancer specialists, chemotherapy and radiation services and even therapeutic massage.

No word on whether Elvis will put in an appearance to see the center's dieticians.
