Time to fix beach water quality

© St. Petersburg Times
published March 3, 2003

Editor: You continue to post where a beach in Pasco County is closed or open due to its water quality and the content of fecal matter.

Do you think there might be a systematic problem? We continue to hear people wanting to develop our shore areas for tourism, but our waters are polluted with a known pollutant. Are we not interested in cleaning this up?

Doesn't our local newspaper look into continuing community problems? Or are you part of the head-turning system? Shame for not standing up to your civic duty. You know where it's coming from -- septic tanks!

I don't mind paying taxes for real issues like sewers.

Why not use the tax money from the tennis complex? This would improve tourism, wouldn't it? Maybe we could just pipe the raw sewage from the tennis complex to the Gulf of Mexico.
-- Dennis Prater, New Port Richey

Drivers should keep their eyes on the road

Re: Wal-Mart in Holiday.

Editor: The problem doesn't lie with either Wal-Mart or U.S. 19 -- it lies with the driver.

I have lived here four months. I come and go across Gulf Trace Boulevard almost every day. If you pay attention and drive, you have very little problem. I've seen worse places up north. People here just drive, not paying attention to what is around them. Yes, it takes a little time to get across 19, but it is a highway.

The other thing is emergency vehicles. No one moves for them.

I stopped at a cross street the other day for a police car coming south on U.S. 19 with full lights and siren. Seven cars went around me because we had a green light. This is not paying attention to the road.

I like my new neighborhood and would enjoy any additional stores. It's the people that drive without paying attention that we should worry about. Pay attention to your surroundings and I bet your drive will get better.

Jug handle turns would prevent U.S. 19 accidents

Editor: I am so sick of the people complaining about another Super Wal-Mart in Holiday. I am glad to hear that they may come there.

Yes, we have one in Port Richey and the one on Little Road, but the one on Ridge is a nightmare to get into and the parking lot is terrible. I live in Holiday and have to go to the Little Road store to shop.

What is wrong with having your choice to shop? Sam's Club is not for everyone and you have to buy in bulk.

Why the state does not get smart about U.S. 19 and install jug handle turns like the state of New Jersey is beyond me.

I am a transplant but a jug handle turn saves lots of accidents from happening. Get with the times, Florida, on our roads and highways.

Just had to add my opinion to welcome Wal-Mart to Holiday.
-- Grace Cittadino, Holiday

Quit complaining about plans for Supercenter

Editor: Enough is enough. A Wal-Mart Supercenter is and always will be a good thing.

Good for the economy, good for the property values, good for added employment and good for the neighborhoods.

You people in Beacon Woods can't tell me you don't shop at a Wal-Mart now and then.

Guess what? Now you don't have to travel as far.

Look at the price of gas now. You won't have to travel as far.

You complain about the traffic it will bring.

Follow the traffic from the Wal-Mart in Port Richey and you will be surprised at the number of cars going to Hudson or farther north.

If I were you, I would be hoping they would build supercenters here and on Spring Hill.
-- Richard Engle, Hudson
