WASHINGTON -- Olaf Kolzig was thankful the reeling Hurricanes did not take it easy on the Capitals.
Kolzig made 21 saves for his third shutout of the season and led Washington over Carolina 2-0 Sunday night.
"It's good for us to play teams that make it hard on us," Kolzig said after his 30th shutout. "It seems to get us going and make it more like playoff hockey."
Jason Doig and Dainius Zubrus scored for the Capitals, who have won three of four and regained possession of first in the Southeast. Washington moved two points ahead of idle Tampa Bay.
The Hurricanes have won once in 16 games, a Feb. 14 victory over Washington. Carolina, last year's Eastern Conference champion, fell to 8-21-2-3 on the road and was shut out for the sixth time this season. The score could have been more lopsided except for Kevin Weekes, who withstood six Washington power plays without surrendering a goal, finishing with 27 saves.
STARS 3, PENGUINS 1: Jason Arnott scored twice, and Jere Lehtinen stretched his goal-scoring streak to four games for host Dallas. Mario Lemieux's power-play goal with 1:48 left spoiled Ron Tugnutt's bid for his third shutout of the season.
The Stars were without right wing Bill Guerin, their second-leading scorer with 25 goals and 50 points, who is expected to miss the rest of the regular season. Guerin remained in a Dallas hospital recovering from emergency surgery to relieve a buildup of blood in his severely bruised right thigh. Guerin was hurt Thursday when he collided with Ottawa's Chris Phillips in the third period.
RED WINGS 5, COYOTES 2: Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists for a career-high four points for host Detroit, which won without captain Steve Yzerman. The Red Wings won their eighth in nine games (8-0-0-1). Yzerman played his first two games of the season last week after being out since offseason knee surgery. He is expected to play today at Columbus. Brett Hull added a goal and two assists, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist as Datsyuk's line accounted for four goals. Teppo Numminen and Drake Berehowsky scored for Phoenix.
THRASHERS 4, DUCKS 1: Vyacheslav Kozlov scored twice and Milan Hnilicka made 29 saves for his third victory of the season for Atlanta. Frantisek Kaberle also scored, and Kozlov and Lubos Bartecko got empty-net goals in the final minute. All of Hnilicka's victories have come on the road. Ruslan Salei scored for Anaheim, which has had two goals or fewer in eight of nine games. AVALANCHE 3, BLACKHAWKS 2 (OT): Alex Tanguay scored at 3:38 of overtime to lift visiting Colorado, 13-1-0-2 in its past 16 games. Alex Zhamnov scored two for Chicago, tying the score each time. The Blackhawks failed to score on six power-play chances. Their power-play unit is last in the league with 29 goals in 258 opportunities.
