Do-re-mi
Not only are the Austrian hills alive with the sound of music, but there's an echo. One year after its successful engagement at Tampa Theatre, the interactive Sing-A-Long Sound of Music returns to the historic venue for a four-day run.
The 1965 classic starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer has been revamped with karaoke-style subtitles and complementary props, creating a level of audience participation rivaling The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Each night's screening is preceded by a costume contest -- nuns and lonely goat herders are popular choices -- and a crash course in Sing-A-Long Sound of Music etiquette.
After that, viewers are free to wave sprigs of edelweiss, shout wisecracks at the screen and, of course, sing along with the stars. Even if you're not a fan of the movie, this schtick is fun. Ticket prices range from $17.50 for tonight's 7:30 p.m. show to $22.50 for the 7:30 p.m. performances Friday and Saturday. Matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are $17.50. Discounts are available for seniors, students and Tampa Theatre film society members.
Call (813) 274-8982 or visit the theater's Web site (www.tampatheatre.org) for information.
