The Little Everglades Steeplechase returns to the Dade City area Sunday, bringing with it all the genteel trimmings of the horse-racing, fox-hunting set: fancy food served on china, big hats, tall drinks. And if last year is an indication, expect at least 10,000 people.
The annual event, held on Bob and Sharon Blanchard's 1,700-acre cattle ranch, will feature racing all day, beginning with an adult amateur race at 9:30 a.m. and ending with the $40,000 Little Everglades Stakes Hurdle Race at 3 p.m. and the $30,000 Sport of Kings Unlimited Claiming Hurdle Race at 3:30.
Between, there will be parades (by carriages and classic cars), contests (best hat, best tailgaters) and races by Jack Russell terriers and draft horses.
Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Little Everglades Ranch, off U.S. 301 north of Dade City.
Admission is $10 per person or $40 per carload. Ages 11 and younger are free. For tickets, call (352) 521-3661 or check www.littleevergladessteeplechase.com.
