Return engagement for Thomas Wilkins
Thomas Wilkins returns this weekend to lead the Florida Orchestra in a masterworks program. For eight seasons, Wilkins was the orchestra's resident conductor, a post in which he made a tremendous impact on the musical life of the Tampa Bay area. He was an especially effective advocate for music education in the schools. Now he is resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Wilkins' program includes Liszt's symphonic poem Les Preludes and Brahms' Symphony No 2. Principal cellist James Connors is the soloist in the Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 for cello. Concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday in Ferguson Hall of Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall and 7:30 p.m. Monday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $20-$42. (813) 286-2403 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286.
Misbehavin' at Mahaffey
Minyon, left, and Chanta Layton star in Ain't Misbehavin', which spotlights music of Fats Waller and evokes the atmosphere of a Harlem nightclub in the 1930s. The original Broadway production in 1978 won three Tony Awards and paved the way for other revues, such as Eubie!, with music of Eubie Blake, and Sophisticated Ladies, with Duke Ellington's music. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $19-$44. (727) 892-5767.
