CELEBRATING A FOLK LEGEND: The Will McLean Music Festival will be March 15 and 16 at the Sertoma Youth Ranch, near Spring Lake in southeastern Hernando County. The festival includes folk singers on three stages, performances by the winners of the annual Best New Florida Song contest, workshops in songwriting, guitar, banjo, autoharp and dulcimer, arts, crafts, storytelling and food. Admission is $12 Saturday, $10 Sunday and $20 for both days. Camping hookups are $12 with electricity, $7 without. CURTAIN CALLS Renaissance Academy is giving a free vocal workshop for middle and high school students on Saturday at the academy building on Little Road just south of Massachusetts Avenue, New Port Richey. The instructor is Matt Roberson, who will teach at the school in the fall. The workshop covers basic breathing techniques, warming up the voice and protecting the voice from injury. The first Hernando County Karaoke Contest will begin April 17 during the Hernando County Fair in the auditorium at the fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St., Brooksville. Preliminary competition will begin at 2 p.m. April 17; if needed, preliminaries may also run April 19 and 22. The finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. April 23. The host and master of ceremonies will be Kevin Longhorn of Longhorn Karaoke. There will be four categories of competition: female soloist, male soloist, children soloists (age 17 and younger) and group vocalists. Groups may include duets, trios, quartets and choirs. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first-place winner in each category. Contestants are required to pay a nonrefundable $5 entry fee per soloist; $20 for a group. The Hernando County Fine Arts Council is accepting applications from artists and craft makers for the 19th annual Hernando County Art, Craft and Music Festival on May 24 and 25 at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville. Only artists displaying their own original work may participate in the juried show. More than $5,000 in cash awards will be given out. The deadline for entries is May 5.
