Trapshooting tournament takes off TuesdayBy ACKIE RIPLEY© St. Petersburg Times published March 7, 2003 ODESSA -- Registration gets under way Tuesday for Trapshoot 2003 at the Silver Dollar Trap Club, an event expected to draw even more participants than last year's competition. "Last year we set an all time record for attendance," said Paul Wolbert, executive director for the annual event. "We expect to break that record one more time." Organizers anticipate more shooters this year in memory of Harry Plymier, one of the event's early organizers, who died last year. This year's competition is named the Harry Plymier Memorial Trapshoot. "He was the driving force behind reviving the trapshoot," Wolbert said. "We'll get a lot of shooters coming out in support." The Florida Gulf Coast Paralyzed Veterans of America holds these trapshoots to raise money for activities in support of paralyzed veterans. The fourth annual event, to be held Tuesday through Thursday, is expected to attract more than 200 competitors from around the nation. The sport requires fast reflexes and a sharp eye over mobility and strength and demonstrates how wheelchair trapshooters can compete with able-bodied trapshooters on an even playing field. An awards banquet Thursday night concludes the three-day competition. For information, call 920-3231.
