MELBOURNE, Australia -- David Coulthard took advantage of a spin by leader Juan Montoya and an earlier black flag to Michael Schumacher to win today's Australian Grand Prix, the Formula One opener.

Coulthard, driving a McLaren, trailed Montoya by nearly three seconds with 11 laps to go. Montoya's Williams spun in Turn2 of the Albert Park circuit.

Montoya took the lead two laps earlier when leader Schumacher, trying for his fourth consecutive win in Australia, was black-flagged by race officials when the barge board from the side of his cockpit was dragged under his Ferrari.

Coulthard finished the 58-lap race around the 3.295-mile circuit in 1 hour, 34 minutes, 42.144 seconds. He beat Montoya by 8.6 seconds. Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren was third, and Schumacher finished fourth.

MOTORCYCLES: Ricky Carmichael earned his fourth consecutive win in the Daytona 250cc Supercross at Daytona International Speedway. Carmichael, on a Honda, led each of the 20 laps and lapped all except second-place Chad Reed and third-place Tim Ferry, both on Yamahas. Michael Brown won the 125 East event.
