School president out after team woes

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- St. Bonaventure president Robert Wickenheiser resigned Sunday as part of the fallout surrounding the troubles of the program.

The university's board of trustees, which unanimously sought Wickenheiser's resignation, also placed athletic director Gothard Lane and coach Jan van Breda Kolff on administrative leave, pending a review. Lane was notified last month that his contract would not be renewed once it expires May31.

Van Breda Kolff hung up his phone without comment when reached by The Associated Press.

The board appointed Rev. Dominic Monti, the school's professor of church history, as interim president. Assistant Billy McCaffrey was named interim coach.

Monday, the Atlantic 10 stripped the team of six league wins and barred it from conference postseason play after center Jamil Terrell was ruled ineligible for violating NCAA junior transfer guidelines. A day later, the players announced they would boycott the final two games.

After the A-10 sanctions, Wickenheiser took full responsibility for approving Terrell's transfer.

GEORGIA: Embattled coach Jim Harrick refused to talk about allegations made by a former employee at Rhode Island that he had grades changed and arranged for boosters to pay players while he was coach there.

The accusations come from a December deposition in a sexual harassment suit field by Christine King, who worked for him in 1997 and 1998, the Providence Journal reported.

Former Georgia player Tony Cole has accused Harrick's program of giving extra benefits to him and helping him commit academic improprieties. The school and the NCAA are investigating.

VILLANOVA: Twelve players were suspended for allegedly making unauthorized telephone calls. Seven sat out Sunday's loss to No. 7 Pittsburgh. The suspensions, ranging from three to eight games, were staggered, allowing the Wildcats to field a seven-man team. Gary Buchanan, Ricky Wright, Andrew Sullivan, Lou Ruskey, Andreas Bloch, Chris Charles and Jason Fraser sat out. Randy Foye, Marcus Austin, Allan Ray, Derrick Snowden and Curtis Sumpter were allowed to play and will serve their suspensions later.
