A different kind of dance
On July 4, 1995, Dwayne Scheuneman dived headfirst into a swimming pool and fractured his C-7 vertebra. The accident left him a quadriplegic.
This weekend, he dances at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's Shimberg Playhouse, part of Asher Dance Eclectic dance troupe's performance of Wheels in Motion. Ten pieces will be performed, to music that ranges from Janet Jackson to Cherry Poppin' Daddies. There also are several modern dance pieces and a dance/skit, which re-enacts a controversial DUI-manslaughter case from New Tampa.
Created by dance therapist Elizabeth Robins-Edelson, Asher Dance Eclectic accepts all kinds of dancers -- physically handicapped or not. Christina Pate was born with a spinal cord injury. Bob Theisen has multiple sclerosis. Melissa Hulse has arthrogryposis, a disease that has weakened her muscles. She walks with leg braces.
Scheuneman, a former UPS driver, said he never wanted to dance. Now, "I really enjoy it," he said.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 and $17. (813) 229-7827 or www.tbpac.org.

Jammin' with the orchestra
Some top-level jazz musicians are appearing with the Florida Orchestra this weekend. Heading the bill is vocalist Karrin Allyson, above, whose 2001 Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane was nominated for a pair of Grammys. Her followup album, In Blue, covered songs by Joni Mitchell, Blossom Dearie, Bonnie Raitt and others. Allyson will be joined by Tampa jazz man Fred Johnson in tributes to Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and George and Ira Gershwin on a pops program conducted by Matt Catingub, who leads the band Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack.
Performances are 8 p.m. Friday at Ferguson Hall of Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall and 7:30 p.m. Monday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $20-$42. (813) 286-2403 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286 or www.floridaorchestra.org.
