MADEIRA BEACH -- A man drowned Friday afternoon while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off Madeira Beach.

Greg L. Lewin, 43, was visiting the beach with his parents, who live in Tampa, authorities said. Lewin began to have trouble about 3 p.m. while swimming near the Grey Gull Beach Resort at 13630 Gulf Blvd.

"Witnesses said he was having difficulty swimming and was floundering in the water," said Detective Tim Goodman of the Pinellas Sheriff's Office.

Passers-by said Lewin was perhaps a couple of hundred feet from shore, in water over his head. Lewin's father, who also was in the water, began calling for help. Two women rushed into the water and helped bring Lewin ashore, but it was too late.

"When he was pulled from the water, he was unresponsive," Goodman said. Madeira Beach paramedics declared Lewin dead about 3:30 p.m.
