MADEIRA BEACH -- Fire Chief Derryl O'Neal is a finalist to become head of the fire department in Omaha, Neb.

O'Neal and nine other candidates interviewed for the position in late February, and the city plans to make a final decision by the end of March.

O'Neal said he is not job hunting. He applied for the Omaha job the last time it was available in 1999, before he became fire chief here. When the Omaha position reopened this year, the city called O'Neal and asked him if he was still interested, O'Neal said.

"I'm not really sure it would be something to consider if they offered me the position," O'Neal said. "I really enjoy working for Madeira Beach."
