JACKSONVILLE -- Three people were injured when a ride collapsed during opening night of a carnival at Regency Square.

Fourteen people were aboard when the ride when it collapsed in the mall parking lot about 9 p.m. Friday. The carnival remained closed Saturday, but a mall spokesman said it may reopen Sunday, pending the outcome of an investigation by city officials.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Tom Francis said none of the injuries were serious. The names of the injured people were not released.

The ride, known as Evolution, carries caged passengers into the air and spins them around. Jacksonville Police Department Lt. Steve Brown said the ride appeared to give way at its base.

"It was almost coming to a stop when it came down," Brown said. "It just crashed. It's amazing no one got more seriously hurt."

The rides at the carnival passed a mandatory state inspection on Friday afternoon.
