Fair lights up with Dollar Night
By JORGE SANCHEZ, Times Staff Writer
INVERNESS -- Today's Citrus County Fair opening gives just about everyone a chance to pay admission and ride a bunch of rides without breaking the family budget. For the first time, fair organizers are offering Dollar Night, beginning at 5 p.m. and lasting late into the night. Admission to the fair is $1. A ride on any midway attraction costs $1. And many food items will be $1. Fair director Jean Grant said the Dollar Night feature comes in response to those who say they can't afford to come. "Now they can't say that anymore," Grant said. "This gives a chance for many more families to come out and enjoy the fair where perhaps they couldn't have been able to afford it before. You can't ride a ride anywhere else in Florida at a fair for just a dollar." Grant said she expects the Dollar Night promotion will pack the fair on opening day, a day that typically features light to moderate attendance. "We usually close up at 10 p.m., but I'm hoping that there will be so many people still here at that time that we'll be able to stay open a little longer." Here are the highlights of this evening's fair activities: 5 p.m. -- Exhibit buildings open. Citrus Shrine Club Clowns -- Jacobs Building. Citrus Railroad Club -- Otto Allen Building.
