Musical overload set for Chasco Fiesta

Country singer Phil Vasser headlines this year's country concert. The festival also will feature music acts catering to many tastes, including pop, hip-hop and jazz.

One of the biggest parts of the 81st annual Chasco Fiesta will be the daily musical entertainment events on the outdoor stage at Sims Park in downtown New Port Richey.

All the shows are free, except the Country Concert on March 29, when songwriter-turned-singer Phil Vassar will headline an all-star show (tickets are $20 and $30; call (727) 842-7651) that opens with local favorites Mikki Taylor, Wiley Fox and Daniel Lee Martin and features the Nashville band Sixwire.

Vassar has written for Alan Jackson, Collin Raye, Tim McGraw, BlackHawk and Jo Dee Messina, and he also wrote all 11 songs on his debut album, Phil Vassar.

Other shows are:

TONIGHT, 6-11 p.m.: "A Magical Night of Entertainment" by Radio Disney, featuring B5, a quintet of young singer/break dancers whose sounds and moves have been compared to the early Jackson 5; 3rd Wish, an Orlando-based close harmony trio who sings a mix of pop and hip-hop; the girl group Triple Image; the teen group Young Sons; and American Idol finalist A.J. Gil (he got 55,095 votes).

SATURDAY, 4-11 p.m.: "Oldies in the Park," featuring classic rockers Knight Sounds, The Rogues (whose lead singer Ron Harrell also impersonates Elvis) and the 1970s tribute group Disco Inferno, who sing songs made famous by the Bee Gees, Earth, Wind and Fire, K.C. and the Sunshine Band and Kool and the Gang.

SUNDAY, 2- 9 p.m.: "Talent Search Showcase," the 26 winners of the statewide "Stars of Tomorrow" contest include jazz singer Jenna Thomas, rap artists SCZ & Prez, and 24 other pop, country, rock and other performers in a seven-hour marathon of music.

MONDAY, 6-10 p.m.: "Bluegrass Music" by Flatland and Goldwing Express.

TUESDAY, 6:30-10 p.m.: "Club Night," with hip-hop artists Emcee & DJ De-Ice, soul singers Urbanesque, Latin hip-hop artists Velez and pop-rock singers EXACT!

WEDNESDAY, 6-9:30 p.m.: "Broadway Review," with singers Mikki Taylor, Mary Ann Edwards, Gabrielle Mirabella, Michael Martin, Sally Langlois, Tammy Jo Dry and Ashley Post.

THURSDAY, 6-10 p.m.: "Rhythm and Bluesmasters," with The Damon Fowler Group, T.C. Carr, Hubert Sumlin, Bob Margolin's All Star Blues Jam, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Bob Stroger.

MARCH 28, 7-11 p.m.: "Family Night Contemporary Christian Music," with the Desert Rain Band and Latin group Salvador.

MARCH 29, 2:30-4:30 p.m.: Rick Hubbard sings blues, jazz, rock and salsa with positive messages for all ages.

MARCH 29, gates open at 5:45 p.m.: "Country Concert," with Mikki Taylor, Wiley Fox, Daniel Lee Martin, Sixwire and headliner Phil Vassar.

MARCH 30, 1-3 p.m.: "Big Band Sounds," with the Buddy Verdi Orchestra.
