Hawkins' career day helps the Owls soar

PHILADELPHIA -- David Hawkins scored a career-high 36 to lead Temple to a 75-62 win over Boston College in the first round of the NIT on Friday.

Hawkins scored 21 in the second half, helping the Owls turn back a team that rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to lead by six three times after halftime.

Temple (17-15) trailed 49-43 when Maurice Collins hit two free throws. Hawkins' three-point play and a Collins drive gave the Owls a 49-48 lead with 12:17 left.

Boston College (19-12) trailed 59-55 with less than four minutes to go when Collins broke up an Eagles two-on-one break. He passed to Hawkins, who laid the ball in, was fouled and made the free throw to give the Owls a 62-57 lead. Temple put the game away from the free-throw line.

Collins scored 17 and Brian Polk added 12 for Temple.

Freshman Craig Smith paced Boston College with 24 points. Big East player of the year Troy Bell scored 15, including six in the second.

IOWA 54, IOWA STATE 53: Brody Boyd sank a free throw with 21 seconds left for the visiting Hawkeyes.

Boyd hit the first of two from the line and put Iowa back in front after Iowa State had rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final 7:38. Except for the final score, the game mirrored the first meeting when the Cyclones rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to win 73-69 in December in Iowa City.

The Cyclones (17-14) had two chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but Tim Barnes missed a short shot outside the lane and a desperation jumper at the buzzer.

Iowa (17-13) was led by Glen Worley, who had 13 points despite fouling out with 2:13 to go.

TEXAS TECH 57, SAN DIEGO ST. 48: Robert Tomaszek scored 14 to help the host Red Raiders pull away in the second.

Texas Tech (20-12) led by 14 in the first, but San Diego State trailed only 46-45 with 6:41 left. The Aztecs (16-14) had a chance to take the lead but Tony Bland missed a layup with 6:14 left.

San Diego then went scoreless for nearly five minutes before Evan Burns hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with 1:47 to go.

Kasib Powell scored 12, and Will Chavis and Andre Emmett -- the Big 12 Conference's leading scorer with a 22.1 average -- added nine each.

Deandre Moore scored 11 and Mike Mackell 10 to lead the Aztecs.

WOMEN'S NIT: The Florida State at Auburn start has been changed to 2 p.m. Sunday.
