Man charged in death of bicyclist in crash
ARIPEKA -- A 51-year-old Brooksville man was charged with manslaughter Friday after his car fatally hit a a bicyclist on Aripeka Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Roger Lynn Allen, 13145 Taft St., was charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash and filing a false report, the FHP said.
Trooper Kenneth Ratcliff said Allen was driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck east on Aripeka Road at 7:16 p.m. on March 6 when he slammed into a bicyclist. Allen got out of his car and "seeing the seriousness of the crash," left the scene, Ratcliff wrote in an arrest report.
Witnesses followed Allen and persuaded him to go back, the report said. He did, and witnesses said he walked over to the bicyclist and almost fell on him, a report states. Witnesses said they smelled alcohol and thought Allen was drunk.
Allen got back into his car and left, the FHP said. Troopers found him in a nearby mobile home, and Allen said his passenger, Leonard Charles, had been driving the truck. Charles told troopers he had not been driving.
The bicyclist, whose name was not available Saturday, died on March 10, the FHP said.
With the help of a Hernando County detective, the FHP gave Allen a voice truth test, which he failed, a report states. Allen then told troopers that he had been driving the truck.
Allen was held on $102,000 bail at the Land O'Lakes jail.
