KEY BISCAYNE -- Todd Martin showed older can be better, beating Andy Roddick 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in an intergenerational matchup at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Sunday.
Martin advanced to the fourth round at Key Biscayne for the second time in his 11-year career. At 32, he had won one match this year entering the tournament, dropping his ranking out of the top 100 for the first time since 1992.
The gray-haired Martin had not won a set in his past two matches against 20-year-old Roddick. But he belted 12 aces and played a flawless tiebreaker.
American wild-card entry Robby Ginepri continued his rapid rise, beating Tampa's James Blake 6-3, 6-2. Ginepri, 20, reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells this month.
For the women, Saddlebrook's Jennifer Capriati overcame seven double faults in the first set, beating Laura Granville 7-6 (7-4), 6-0. She faces Bradenton's Sarah Taylor today. Venus and Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport also won.
ANNA IN SARASOTA FIELD: Anna Kournikova, ranked 66th, received a wild-card entry for the Sarasota Clay Court Classic at the Meadows Country Club from March31-April6. The field includes nine top-25 players and major-champions Conchita Martinez, Iva Majoli and Mary Pierce.
The kennel cough at Derby Lane postponed Saturday night's $100,000 Distance Classic stakes. A new date has not been determined. Limited races will continue at the St. Petersburg track until the illness subsides. Races could be canceled, however, so for updated information, visit www.derbylane.com or call (727) 812-3339.
Candid Glen, an 84-1 shot, won the $650,000 Grade II Explosive Bid Handicap at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Candid Glen, trained by Andrew Leggio Jr., took a narrow lead in the stretch, then held off Rouvres, Freefourinternet and Seinne to win a four-horse photo finish by a neck. He paid $170.20, $33 and $14.80, the largest payoff in any Spring Festival race.
AQUEDUCT: Smok'n Frolic won by 2 1/4 lengths in the $108,000 Grade III Next Move Handicap for fillies and mares 3 and older, returning $3.80, $2.40 and $2.10.
GULFSTREAM: Favored Tweedside recovered from a slow start to win the $200,000 Grade II Orchid Handicap at Gulfstream Park, returning $4.40, $2.60 and $2.20.
SANTA ANITA: Road to Slew came from behind to win the $111,300 Crystal Water Handicap by a half-length, paying $6, $4.60 and $3.80.
Bode Miller edged Erik Schlopy to win his second straight slalom title at the U.S. Alpine National Championships at Lake Placid, N.Y. Miller, who won the Super G title last weekend, finished two runs in 2 minutes, 6.59 seconds. He is second in the overall World Cup standings.
HOCKEY: Nora Tallus scored on a slap shot 4:19 in the second overtime to lead host Minnesota Duluth to its third straight NCAA championship with a 4-3 victory over Harvard in the women's Frozen Four. Dartmouth beat Minnesota 4-2 for third.
BASSMASTER: Zell Rowland caught almost 100 pounds, finishing 10 pounds shy of a record catch weight to win the four-day tour in Manning, S.C.
SAILING: The 505 and Flying Dutchman Midwinter Regatta concluded the seventh race in heavy rain on Tampa Bay. St. Petersburg's Ethan Bixby and Hans Birkholz won. The Flying Dutchman class winner was Tim Sayles and Pavell Ruzicka of Pennsylvania, with St. Petersburg's Chris Russick and Stan Hyatt second.
SOCCER: Ed Buddle scored twice as Columbus beat Panama's Arabe Unido 3-0, and Alexi Lalas scored on a header in the 72nd minute to lead Los Angeles to a 1-0 victory over CD Motagua of Honduras, advancing both MLS teams to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.
