Chasco Fiesta fun, learning continue

NEW PORT RICHEY -- Curious about American Indian life, arts, history, horses, and dancing? The answers are being given from noon to 8 p.m. today and each day through Sunday during the Native American Festival and Dance Competition at Chasco Fiesta in Sims Park in New Port Richey. The educational programs are being given by visiting American Indians who are participants in the festival. The events are in the circle by the Cotee River. The dancers are vying for more than $10,000 in prize money throughout the event. In addition, the American Indians' arts, crafts, music and food booths will be open during those hours selling reservation and costume jewelry, beads, herbal teas, musical instruments, CDs and tapes of flute playing, drums and singing, clothing, rugs, fake-fur blankets, hair ornaments, children's toys, ground corn for muffins, incense, games, fine arts, decorative art and casual art. The food vendors will be selling buffalo burgers, fry bread and other American Indian treats. PROGRAM SCHEDULE Noon-1 p.m.: "Living on the Plains," a tepee/visual primitive skills demonstration by Little Big Mountain 1-1:30 p.m.: "Warrior on Horseback," a history of the horse and the native peoples, by Chipa Wolf 1:30-2 p.m.: Tommy Wildcat, flutist of the year 2-2:30 p.m.: Dance and drum presentation by the Iron Mountain Dancers 2:30-3 p.m.: Ron Colombe, Lakota, American Indian poet/author 3-3:30 p.m.: Billy Lacey, Cherokee, storytelling 3:30-4 p.m.: Salinas Family Aztec Dancers 4-4:45 p.m.: "Living on the Plains," Little Big Mountain 4-5:30 p.m.: "Warrior on Horseback," Chipa Wolf 5:45-6:15 p.m.: Ron Colombe, Lakota poet 6:15-6:45 p.m.: Tommy Wildcat, flute 7 p.m.: Iron Mountain Dancers, Big Mountain Family The stage will rock from 6 to 10 p.m. tonight, when SBray Productions presents "Club Night." Featured performers are Emcee and DJ De-Ice, hip-hop; the rhythm and blues and soul-singing group Urbanesque; Latin hip-hop group Velez; and the street funk group EXACT. In addition, the West Pasco Kiwanis Flea Market continues from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Wednesday in the New Port Richey Recreation Center on Van Buren Street. The carnival and nonprofit food booths will be open from 5 to 10 p.m.
