TAMPA -- How can the future of black children be influenced by the plight of African-American families?

That question will be explored by experts on child psychology and race relations during a three-day conference at the University of South Florida called the Black Child and Family: Reconstructing the Village.

Sponsored by the Institute on Black Life, the conference will be held April 3-4 at the USF campus. The final day of the event will be at the University Area Community Development Complex at 14013 N 22nd St.

"We are dealing with issues that are germane to the perpetuation of the black race," said Sam Wright, associate dean of student relations at USF.

The keynote speaker of the event will be Harvard professor of psychiatry Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a former consultant for the popular Cosby television show. Poussaint's address will be on bringing up healthy black children in America.

Other speakers include child advocate Jack Levine and Elbert Marsh from the National Science Foundation.

The Institute on Black Life hosts an annual conference at USF so researchers and community advocates can engage in a broad discussion of issues facing African-Americans.

The conference is free and open to the public.

"This event will provide discussions and information on pressing problems that face black families and children," said Marvin Moore, assistant director of the Institute on Black Life. "We hope not to just talk about problems but about the solutions to problems."
