400 callers ask about caring for troops' petsBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published March 27, 2003 Hundreds of Tampa Bay area residents have expressed interest in caring for the pets of military men and women being sent overseas. More than 400 people have called the groups organizing the effort. About two dozen have filled out an application, but organizers are anticipating many more. Those selected will undergo a home inspection and must sign a contract stating that they will give the pet back. Applications for both military personnel and foster pet owners are available online at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/petsofpatriots. Those interested may also call Holly Felty, volunteer coordinator for the Pets of Patriots Foster Care Program, at 880-0430 or Hillsborough County's animal shelter at 744-5660. Donations -- money, food, bedding, etc. -- may be made through the Humane Society of Tampa Bay at 876-7138.
