A retrospective of the works of miniaturist Edna Estabrooks is on display at the Citrus County Art League gallery through Tuesday.

Estabrooks' works are small in size, but full of technique and details. Many of them are Florida landscapes and are rich in imagery. They are only a few square inches in size.

The exhibit was organized by art league member Betty Tone, who was a close friend of Estabrooks, a Lecanto resident who passed away in January.

"Her will gave a $10,000 bequest to the art league building fund," Tone said. "This is her second one; she gave the art league $10,000 while she was still alive."

Estabrooks painted scenes with acrylics and her work regularly won awards at miniature shows in Montana, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada and Stuttgart, Germany. Besides being a painter, Estabrooks was a pilot, an actor, a securities trader, a journalist and a captain in the Women Army Auxiliary Corps. She was a resident of Lecanto.

The exhibit is compiled mostly from the works of private collectors such as Tone, Inverness attorney Michael Mountjoy and art league member Embeth Nagy.

"It really takes a special technique to create miniatures, especially on her level," Tone said. "Some of her art brushes only had two or three bristles on them."

The Estabrooks exhibit is joined by a collection of regular-sized oils and watercolors all contributed by art league members. Among the exhibiting artists are Suzanne C. Mahr, Anne Weaver, Sharon Harris, Barbara Kerr and Joyce Cusik.

Gallery hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays at the Citrus County Art League, 2644 N Annapolis Ave., Citrus Hills. Call 746-7606.
