Bring insect repellent to this beautiful park on the eastern fringe of Hillsborough County. The river's high and running fast due to recent rains, and the mosquitoes are flourishing.
Alderman's Ford, a popular spot to launch a canoe on the Alafia River, also is a great place to have a picnic or to ride a bike along the meandering paths and wooden boardwalk. Old oaks heavy with moss provide a welcome respite from the heat. Birdwatchers can enjoy the many species found in the park.
On a recent weekday outing, four 12- to 15-inch male pileated woodpeckers swooped and sang as they played among the tall pines.
An angler carrying a bait bucket boasted about the bluegill and nine catfish he had caught in the tea-colored water. He released the fish, he said, as he was just having some fun on his vacation.
The park has 1,141 acres, with the Alafia River influencing most of its character. The north and south prongs of the river meet within the park's boundaries. Many small springs and creeks dot the hillsides that slope up from the flood plain, just waiting to be hiked.
Amenities include nine picnic shelters, picnic tables and a visitor center with restrooms and displays of nonpoisonous snakes in cages. Posters, animal skeletons and fish tanks also are on display, while quiz boards test environmental and wildlife knowledge. The museum section is open only on weekends.
