Military news

Army Sgt. 1st Class Richard P. Roseberry, grandson of Chester and Mildred Bickford of South Pasadena, was recently promoted to his current rank and is posted at MacDill Air Force Base. He joined the Army in 1992 and completed his basic training at Fort Sills, Okla. He served with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he was a platoon leader and earned the rating of U.S. Jumpmaster. He served for one year in Korea and on his return was assigned to Fort Campbell, Ky. He has served overseas several times in the last year and a half in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Army Maj. Landy "Tom" Nelson Jr., son of Barbara and Army Col. (Ret.) Landy Nelson of St. Petersburg, was promoted to his current rank while serving as an Olmstead Scholar at the University of Budapest, Hungary. He has been selected to attend the Army's Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and the Army's Airborne and Ranger schools.

Lt. Col. Michael LaViolette, son of Pat First of Seminole, is an Army reservist assigned to the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade in Riverdale, Md. He was called to active duty in December and is stationed at Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base.

Navy Airman Apprentice Evan P. Dugan, son of Pauline and Robert J. Dugan of St. Petersburg, has completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2002 graduate of Lakewood High School.
