Bloomingdale: A win is a win

Playing in perhaps the state's toughest district, the Bulls don't take struggling Gaither for granted.

BRANDON - The trouble with Bloomingdale is that it plays in Class 6A, District 5, one of the toughest in the state.

Win this district and your team suddenly becomes a favorite to win the state title.

Why think otherwise?

Five of the district's teams - Venice, Sarasota, Sarasota Riverview, Riverview and Bloomingdale - have been ranked in the state's top 10 at the same time.

Venice has been ranked No. 1 for much of the season and Riverview, which returned its top pitcher from last season, Beth DiPietro, is the defending state champion.

Plus there's this: Of the five aforementioned teams, none have a loss outside the district, except Riverview, which was beaten by Durant during the weekend.

So that's why Tuesday night, Bloomingdale didn't take anything for granted in its 7-2 victory over struggling district foe Gaither.

"No way," Bloomingdale coach Mike Clamon said. "Gaither beat Sarasota Riverview and we lost to Sarasota Riverview, so what does that tell you? Gaither (4-7) can get it done, and we knew that.

"And when you're playing in this district you need all the wins you can get."

Bloomingdale (10-3, 4-3) took control early, scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings for a 4-1 lead.

The Bulls also felt comfortable with junior Allison Kime looking strong on the mound. Kime, throwing mainly fastballs and changeups, allowed two hits while striking out nine.

"I felt great tonight," said Kime, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee last summer. "I feel strong."

As for playing in 6A-5, Kime said she relishes the challenge.

"It's tough because I know I can't have one off moment," she said. "I know if I throw one down the middle, it's gone.

"But I like that, because you have to be at your best. I look forward (to playing district games)."
