On Friday, the 74th West Coast Invitational will be held at Lakewood. Field events start at 3 p.m. and the running finals are at 7. Admission is $4.

Boys teams competing include Boca Ciega, Clearwater, Countryside, Dixie Hollins, Gibbs, Lakewood, Largo, Northeast, Osceola, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg.

Another meet, the Keswick Christian Invitational, also will be Friday. Field events start at 3 p.m. and the running finals at 4. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

This is the first year the Crusaders have a track on campus. Of the 25 schools Keswick coach Lance Lipham invited, 14 will attend.

They are Academy of the Lakes, Admiral Farragut, Calvary Christian, Cambridge, Clearwater Central Catholic, Indian Rocks Christian, Keswick Christian, Lakeland Christian, Northside Christian, Shorecrest, St. Petersburg Catholic, Tampa Baptist, Tampa Prep and Temple Heights.

Alumni Update

Former Clearwater Central Catholic pole vaulter Paul Condron and Boca Ciega high jumper Jimmy Baxter did well at the Florida Relays last weekend.

Competing at his home track, Condron, a junior at the University of Florida, cleared 17 feet, 81/2 inches to win the pole vault in the invitational division.

Baxter, a junior at the University of South Florida, returned to the site where he tied the state record in the high jump (7-2) three years ago. In the invitational field Saturday, Baxter went 7-1/2 and tied two other jumpers for third in his signature event.

Wipe Out

While the Florida Relays showcased many of the county's former athletes, current ones were nowhere to be found.

The Class A and 2A portion of the meet was canceled Thursday due to a thunderstorm. The rest of the meet was not loaded with competitors from Pinellas.

The county medaled in one event (Lakewood's second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay) and finished in the top 12 in two others (St. Petersburg Catholic's Tony Cormier was 12th in the 1-mile invitational and Clearwater Central Catholic's Kevin Lyons was 14th in the 2-mile invitational).

Five to Watch

1. Matt Watkins, Keswick Christian: He won the discus at the Mustang Invitational two weeks ago with a toss of 128 feet that set a school record. His individual performance helped the Crusaders win the team title for the second year.

2. Matt Timm, Largo: At the Kiwanis Ed Wells Jr. Invitational, he finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:01.5, the third-best in the county.

3. Louis Murphy, Lakewood: He was part of the Spartans' 4x400 relay team that placed second at the Florida Relays, the highest finish in any event among county competitors. Lakewood's time of 42.12 is tops in the county.

4. Pat Lynch, Countryside: A state qualifier in the shot put last season, Lynch has the top mark in the county (50-6).

5. Reno Eguia, Seminole: The Florida International recruit who helped the Warhawks football team advance to the region semifinals also is excelling in track. He has thrown 49-2 in the shot put and trails only Lynch in the county.
