'Flo' Fussell, descendant of local settlersBy CRAIG BASSE, Times Obituaries Editor© St. Petersburg Times published April 10, 2003 GULFPORT -- Florence Martha "Flo" Fussell, a descendant of some of the settlers of Gulfport, has died at 86. Mrs. Fussell, said to have been the longest continuous resident of the city, died Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at the Boca Ciega Center. She was a great-granddaughter of Rebecca Slaughter Barnett, commonly believed to be, with her husband, Capt. James Barnett, the first settlers to build a home in this area in the late 1860s. Mrs. Fussell was a supporter of the Gulfport Library and a past president of the auxiliary of the Gulfport Lions Club. Her husband of 46 years, Theodore R. "Red" Fussell, a former City Council member and plumbing inspector, died in 1982. Survivors include two daughters, Audrey Lou Fussell Squire, Indian Pass, and Mary Linda Bell, Central Point, Ore., and a son, Theodore Jr., Gulfport; 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gulfport Memorial Funeral Home, 5601 Gulfport Blvd. S. There will be a gathering of friends after a 3 p.m. service Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Gulfport Lions Club or the Gulfport Library.
