Stanley Cup

LEAGUE: NHL.

FIRST PRESENTED: 1893.

NOTABLE: The oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes, it was donated by Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada. . . . Weighs 35 pounds and stands just less than 3 feet in height. . . . Each winning player and member of management gets to take the Cup home for a day to share with family and friends. . . . Is the only trophy in professional sports that has the names of winning players, coaches, management and club staff engraved on the silver chalice. . . . In order to add new names each year, bands of the trophy often are retired and displayed at the Hall of Fame. ... Was purchased for 10 guineas ($48.67 at the time) in 1892. . . . The Cup is loaned to the NHL champion each year but must be returned.

Vince Lombardi Trophy

LEAGUE: NFL.

FIRST PRESENTED: 1967.

NOTABLE: Renamed in honor of the former Green Bay Packers coach and general manager in 1971, when the game still was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship. . . . Handcrafted by Tiffany & Co. and valued at $12,500, the trophy depicts a football in kicking position and is made entirely of sterling silver. It stands 22 inches tall, weighs 7 pounds and takes 72 man-hours to craft. . . . Winning team keeps the trophy, and a new one is created each year.

Commissioner's Trophy

LEAGUE: Major League Baseball.

FIRST PRESENTED: 1967.

NOTABLE: Also known as the World Championship Trophy. . . . Made of brass and gold plate with an ebony base and a baseball in the center made of pewter with a silver finish. . . . 30 pennants represent the 30 big-league teams. . . . Measures 30 inches high and 36 inches around at the base and weighs 30 pounds with a value of $15,000. . . . Winning team keeps trophy.

Larry O'Brien Trophy

LEAGUE: NBA.

FIRST PRESENTED: 1978.

NOTABLE: Originally called the Walter A. Brown Trophy after the league pioneer and Boston Celtics owner (an earlier NBA championship bowl also was named after Brown). . . . Renamed in 1984 in honor of outgoing commissioner O'Brien, who served from 1975-84. . . . Made of sterling silver with 24 carat gold overlay and designed by Tiffany & Co. of New York. . . . Measures 2 feet high and weighs 141/2 pounds (basketball depicted is regulation size). . . . Valued at $13,500. . . . Winning team keeps trophy.
