Speedy swimmer is good as gold
By TERRY JONES CARROLLWOOD -- Gold was the color of choice for 10-year-old Allison Nelson as she guided the Carrollwood Village Swim Team to a successful performance in the Junior Olympics state meet March 6-9 in Gainesville. The Junior Olympics are for competitive swimmers ages 8 to 14. Older swimmers compete in the Senior Championships, held the first week of March in Clearwater. The versatile swimming speedster captured gold medals in both the 50- and 100-yard backstroke events for girls 10 and under. She also placed sixth in the 100 individual medley and was a member of the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. Joining Nelson on both fifth-place relays were teammates Katie Cook, Brittany Zayas and Molly Sheridan. Cook also finished in the top eight in three other events: sixth in the 500 freestyle, seventh in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle. In ages 11-12 girls competition, Emeri Lewkowicz , 12, placed fourth in the 1000 freestyle and 100 butterfly, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 200 individual medley. For girls 13-14, Gina Mayer placed sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle and eighth in the 1000 freestyle. Joining Mayer for a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay were Jenn-Jenn Mackey, Erin Hotchkiss and Megan Cook. Dylan Attal , placed sixth in the 50 breaststroke and eighth in the 100 breaststroke for boys 10-and-under. For boys ages 11-12, Vincent Donnelly placed eighth in the 100 butterfly. In the same age group for boys, Stephen Brock, Jesse Alpert-Stern and Brett Davis joined Donnelly to place in the top eight in four relays. They were seventh in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley and eighth in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley. Stephen Sheridan placed fourth in the 200 butterfly, for boys 13-14. Carrollwood Village Swim Team finished 16th overall as a team in a field of 65 youth swim teams in the J.O.'s . Billy Shugart, Matthew Attal and Sullivan Lynch joined Sheridan to place sixth in the 400 freestyle relay, seventh in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays and eighth in the 400 medley relay. * * * TEAM NEW TAMPA -- As a team, TNT finished 31 in the Junior Olympics. However, 14-year-old Kelly Hug was the only top eight finisher. She won a silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke event for girls 13-14. * * * SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS -- Grant Nelson, 17, won a gold medal in the 1,000-yard freestyle and silver in the 500 freestyle to capture top honors for the Carrollwood Village Swim Team in the Senior Championships in March in Clearwater. The team placed sixth overall in a field of 35 teams. Nelson competed in the men's senior division for ages 17 and older. He was also the only top-eight finisher for the Carrollwood team in the Sectional Championships Mar. 13-16 in Orlando. Nelson took fifth place in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. In women's age 15-16 competition in Clearwater, Carly Cavalieri placed sixth in the 100 backstroke and Katrina Cooke placed sixth in the 1650 freestyle. Gina Mayer, 13, moved up to the senior women division and placed fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, fifth in the 1000 freestyle and seventh in the 500 freestyle. Emeri Lewkowicz, 12, moved up to the older women's group to capture gold in the 200 butterfly and bronze in the 400 individual medley. She also placed eighth in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. In the same division Carrie Foster, 13, was sixth in the 200 backstroke. Britny Went, 14, was fifth in the 1650 freestyle and seventh in the 200 backstroke. Brittany Boldizsar, 14, won a silver medal in the 200 butterfly. Becky Bird, 17, won silver medals in both the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. Natalie Davis and Megan Cook joined Bird and Lewkowicz for a seventh-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay and Cavalieri, Lewkowicz, Boldizsar and Bird placed seventh in the 400 medley relay. Carrollwood boys placing in the top eight included Jeff Mueller and Cesar Crovo, competing in the ages 15-16 division. Mueller, 15, was fourth in the 1650 freestyle, sixth in the 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly and eighth in the 200 individual medley. Crovo, 16, was fourth in the 200 butterfly. * * * TEAM NEW TAMPA SENIORS -- As a team, TNT placed ninth of 35 teams. Margie Chamberlin, 15, won the only gold medal for TNT swimmers, placing first in the 200 yard butterfly for women 15-16. Teammate Audrey Prior, 16, placed fifth in the same event. Prior also won a silver medal in the 200 backstroke, placed fifth in the 100 backstroke and was part of the seventh-place 400 medley relay team. Macey Bronson, 14, Kelly Hug, 14, and Chamberlin were part of the same relay team. In the sectional championships March 13-16, in Orlando, Chamberlin was the only TNT swimmer to place with a sixth in the 200 butterfly. Hug also won a silver medal in the 200 backstroke, placed fifth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 50 freestyle. In men's competition, Michael Silva won a bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke, placed fifth in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley, eighth in the 100 freestyle and swam a leg in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Matt Brody, Kevin Hug and Ryan Reyes were also on both relays. Brody also placed fifth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 breaststroke. Reyes added an individual seventh-place finish in the 200 butterfly.
