CHICAGO -- The Pirates placed leftfielder Brian Giles on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his right knee Saturday.

Adam Hyzdu was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.

Giles sprained the medial collateral ligament trying to stretch a single into a double Thursday against Milwaukee.

Giles was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his Pirates career. Giles was last on the disabled list in 1998, with a sprained left ankle while playing with Cleveland.

"It was worse than I thought," Giles said. "I never had a knee problem so it is hard to tell. Hopefully, in 15 days I will be ready to go."

Giles is scheduled to be re-examined by team doctors Monday in Pittsburgh.

BLUE JAYS: Catcher Ken Huckaby was designated for assignment and outfielder Reed Johnson was purchased from Triple-A Syracuse.

PHILLIES: Jimmy Rollins' single in the second extended his hitting streak to seven games

RED SOX: Reliever Alan Embree was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. He is expected to be ready to pitch when he's eligible to be activated on April 24. Left-hander Kevin Tolar was called up from Pawtucket of the International League.

REDS: Aaron Boone got the team's first stolen base. The last time the Reds went 10 games without a stolen base to start a season was 1957.

ROYALS: First baseman Mike Sweeney sat out with the flu that has swept through the clubhouse.

WHITE SOX: Pinch-hitter Sandy Alomar hit into a rare 8-4 forceout. Tigers centerfielder Hiram Bocachica dropped a fly ball, but recovered in time to throw out Aaron Rowand at second.
