Paved trail is a must for safety of park walkers

© St. Petersburg Times, published April 14, 2003

Editor: Re: Please don't pave the mulch trail in Veterans Park, April 6 letter to the editor.

Bonnie Recca is my friend. We both enjoy walking in Veterans Park. I've been walking there for 10 years now. I'm 72 years old. I walk every day, seven days a week, unless it's raining.

I have had three falls on the mulch trail, as most of the mulch is just a bunch of sticks. You step on one end and trip on the other. In the winter, ice forms on the mulch. In heavy rain, you get big holes to walk on.

So, I and others have been walking in the park parking lot. We are in the way of traffic. We walk for 1 1/2 hours each day, and we all enjoy the park.

The park attendant keeps it looking so nice. We love that park and, of course, we would like to be back on the trail -- a paved trail.

Hospital's public relations loss may be patients' gain

Editor: Re: Oak Hill Hospital eliminates positions, April 9 Times.

Oak Hill Hospital has laid off staff to reduce costs in a period of reduced demand for services. One such person is the public relations officer. Thereby will come, at least, a halt in the flow of gimmicks to promote the hospital.

Maybe, instead, the hospital now will promote itself in the old-fashioned way by its quality of total patient care. Such care can be spread by word of mouth by satisfied patients, which costs nothing. Further, it reduces charges patients find increasingly difficult to pay.

New signs are costly, and some aren't even correct

Editor: There are new green street signs at every intersection on U.S. 19. Just like the song goes, "Signs, signs, everywhere are signs." A lot of signs, a lot of expense to the taxpayer and a distraction to boot.

And some of these signs are misspelled. Look at the signs at one of our main roads, Spring Hill Drive. Spring Hill is not one word, but two.

Another corrective action that needs to be taken is that both of the signs say Spring Hill Road. When did Spring Hill Drive get changed to Spring Hill Road? Oops!

The residents of Spring Hill Drive would like to see this corrected.
