Zephyrhills' David Reutimann raced to his best finish in a NASCAR Busch Grand National series race, taking fifth Saturday at the Pepsi 300 at Nashville Speedway.
Reutimann, who had never finished higher than 12th in five previous Busch appearances, earned $16,375 while filling in for veteran Joe Nemechek in the No. 87 Cellular One Chevrolet. He started the race 16th and was in the top 10 for 189 of 225 laps.
Reutimann made a splash in the Happy Hour prerace practice session Saturday morning, recording the fastest time with a top speed of 160.9 mph and a lap time of 29.82 seconds.
Up next on the Busch circuit for Reutimann is a trip to California Motor Speedway on April 26 for the second of five races with Hills Bros. Racing. A top-five finish could help him earn a ride for one Winston Cup race in 2004 as part of a promotional contest with his sponsor.
The California race will keep him from competing in the season opener of the Kodak Southeast Series, which he finished second in last year. He'll catch up with the smaller circuit for a race at Myrtle Beach Speedway on May 16.
