Angels deal takes flight

MILTON -- The Navy's Blue Angels punctuated Wednesday's announcement that the PGA Champions Tour stop here will be renamed after the precision flying team by roaring 200 feet over the course where it's played.

The tournament will become the Blue Angel Classic next year. It tees off Friday as the Emerald Coast Classic at The Moors Golf Club, about 20 miles northeast of Pensacola Naval Air Station, where the Blue Angels are based.

The name change took some rule-bending to get unofficial Navy support because the service cannot legally sponsor or endorse an event, retired Vice Adm. Jack Fetterman said at a news conference.

"There is an overlapping with what makes the Blue Angels very special," PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said. "The players on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour and the Blue Angels inspire us to do better, reach higher and do more."
