Mideast military news

Marine Cpl. Michael Ryan Schlesinger, son of Robin Schlesinger-Allen and Michael Schlesinger, both of Pinellas Park, was deployed in February to Kuwait with the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marines. He is a subsistence supply clerk. He is a student at the University of South Florida and a 1999 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School.

Marine Cpl. Kevin Albrecht, grandson of Ruth Shong of St. Petersburg, was deployed in February and is serving in Saudi Arabia with an aviation reconnaissance unit. He is a mechanic.

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Mark A. Morton, son of Myrtle Morton of St. Petersburg, has been serving in the Middle East for six months. He is the chief of the Air Force Fire Department at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. He joined the Air Force 20 years ago. He is a 1980 graduate of Northside Christian School.

Navy Seaman David Spates, son of Susan DeMoya of Seminole, was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea from Gaeta, Italy, aboard the USS La Salle. He is a fireman and engineer. He attended Seminole High School.

Air Force Major Vanessa L. Mattox, daughter of Leola and Gene Jackson of St. Petersburg, is serving in the Middle East with the 459th Aeromedical Evacuation Squad, stationed in Sicily. She is a nurse and flies with the wounded from Kuwait to hospitals in Spain and Germany. She is a 1977 graduate of Winter Haven High School.

Navy Commander Bill Robertson, son of Bunnie Robertson of St. Petersburg, is serving in the Persian Gulf region with the 5th Fleet as commander of Task Force 56, Diving and Salvage and Marine Environmental Response Operations. He is stationed in Bahrain.

Army 2nd Lt. Jon H. Shackelford, husband of Linda Shackelford and son-in-law of Margie and Gary Patenaude of Seminole, was deployed in March to Kuwait with the 24th Transportation Company from Fort Riley, Kan. He is a platoon leader. He joined the Army in 2001 and completed Officer Training School at Fort Eustis, Va. He also served as a Marine for eight years and is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.

Marine 1st Lt. Joseph Michael Garaux, grandson of Anita and Joseph C. Petenzi of St. Petersburg, was deployed to Kuwait with Combat Service Support Battalion 10 from Camp Pendleton.

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Robert E. Bean, son of Mary M. Bean of St. Petersburg, was deployed to Qatar in January. He is a video teleconference facilitator at Central Command. He graduated from Gibbs High School in 1989.

Army Sgt. Robert S. Brodosi II, grandson of Elizabeth and Gene Brodosi of Pinellas Park, was deployed to the Middle East in November from Fort Bliss, Texas. He is a mechanic with a Patriot missile division serving in Saudi Arabia. He attended Osceola High School.

Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Johnson, grandson of Rae M. Johnson of St. Petersburg, is serving in Iraq with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian Padley, grandson of Norma and Forrest Padley of St. Petersburg and son of Pam and Les Padley of Largo, was deployed in November to the Middle East aboard the USS Mount Whitney command ship. He is a hull technician. He graduated from Largo High School in 2000.
