Tourtelot expanding its office

ST. PETERSBURG -- A new office building for Tourtelot Brothers Inc. soon will be going up on the southwest corner of Fourth Street N and Fourth Avenue. A skid steer loader has been moving dirt at the site where the real estate company will build a two-story building and remodel its existing one-story building.

William C. Tourtelot, president of the company, originally planned to put a pair of two-story buildings on the site. But part of the land was sold and construction plans were scaled back to one building.

Tourtelot Brothers will use much of the new space, leasing part of it to a title company.

Beach Drive shop moving close by

ST. PETERSBURG -- Cherie's Eklektika is leaving its space at 138 Beach Drive NE and moving up to the next block at the corner.

Plans are for the new shop to open at 202 Beach Drive NE on May 1, said Cherie Doughtie. She needs more room for her shop of housewares, gift items, folk art, tin toys and bath items and alternative cleaning supplies.

Previously the space at 202 Beach Drive held Happy Paws, a shop for pet lovers, and a Thomas Kinkade gallery.

Doughtie said she likes the corner location on the 200 block better than her current location. "For some reason, our end of Beach Drive is not that popular for pedestrians," she said.

Doughtie plans to sublease the space at 138 Beach Drive NE.

Projects at USF topic for meeting

ST. PETERSBURG -- Contractors can hear about upcoming projects at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Tuesday at the general meeting of the St. Petersburg Area Black Chamber of Commerce.

Cedric B. Howard, director of student affairs at USF St. Petersburg, is scheduled to speak. USF's St. Petersburg campus began accepting freshmen and sophomores five years ago. Previously it had been for juniors, seniors and graduate students and was a commuter school.

As the student population grows and the university changes to a more traditional campus, USF will need to expand. Additions will include student housing.

The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Petersburg Business Development Center at 1045 16th St. S.

June 1 deadline for league benefit

ST. PETERSBURG -- Merchants who want to participate in the Junior League of St. Petersburg's November benefit have a little more time to sign up.

The league has extended its deadline to June 1 for those who want to participate in Celebrate the Season, a three-day shopping event/fundraiser that doubles as a showcase for retailers.

Celebrate the Season is set for Nov 14-16 at the Coliseum. It will offer home decor, clothing, toys, jewelry and more.

For more information, call 895-5018.
