LUTZ -- A 12-year-old boy was killed about 6 p.m. Monday while riding his bike across a busy intersection, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

They said Germain Alvarez Mardoquin of Lutz was on his bicycle at the southwest corner of U.S. 41 and Lutz Lake Fern Road, waiting for the light to change. When it did, he started across the intersection.

Officials said Michael Shively, 39, of 25241 Bunting Circle in Land O'Lakes was driving his 1998 Chevrolet pickup and didn't stop in time at the light.

He swerved, clipped a truck that was stopped at the light and hit the boy, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Germain was taken to University Community Hospital, where he died.

Carter said the accident remains under investigation.
