ST. PETERSBURG -- A man who jumped into a lake to rescue a woman from alligators was in critical condition Monday at Edward White Hospital after going into cardiac arrest during the rescue, authorities said.

The man has been identified as 41-year-old Allyn Allen of Bradenton, said police spokesman George Kajtsa.

Denise Glass, 40, the woman Allen was trying to save, was uninjured, though she was later arrested. The St. Petersburg woman was released Monday from the Pinellas County Jail after being charged with carrying a concealed box cutter and swimming in a posted lake, a city ordinance violation.

The rescue began at 5:15 p.m. Sunday at Booker Creek Park on 13th Avenue N near 23rd Street.

Glass, who had been drinking, swam to the center of the lake and began flailing her arms. Police were called, and Allen tried to bring her to shore, but she forced his head under water.

About the same time, two alligators swam toward the couple. Officer Randy Bricker fired several shots at the gators, but they were not hit. Bricker then helped bring Glass and Allen to safety. One of the gators was later captured.
