Military news

Army Cpl. Kenneth E. Banes, son of Julie and Joseph James of Seminole, recently earned the Bronze Star while serving in Afghanistan as a Tactical Area Control Team chief with a Special Forces unit. He is currently stationed at Fort Bragg with the 82nd Airborne, 1st and 58th Aviation Group, Bravo Co., where he is in Leadership Development Training and plans to go on to Warrant Officer's School. He hopes to learn to fly Black Hawk helicopters and then fixed wing planes.

Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Evan Coppens, son of Randy Coppens and Gail George-Coppens and grandson of Steve George Jr., all of St. Petersburg, was awarded the Coast Guard Medal for heroism when he jumped into freezing water to rescue a drowning man. He was serving aboard the USCGC Sangamon on the Illinois River. He is currently stationed at Fort Myers Beach, where he is attending emergency medical training and paramedic school.

Army Pfc. Steven John Jimenez, nephew of Joan Paulercio of Seminole, has been deployed to South Korea from Fort Sill, Okla. He earned his GED from Clearwater Adult Education Center and joined the Army in January 2003.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Joshua Adam Chellberg, grandson of Margaret and Robert Chellberg of Seminole, was recently promoted to his current rank. He completed basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and continued his training in avionics at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. He is stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., where he will advance in avionics.

Army Sgt. Alicia Parnell, daughter of Kathy and Larry Parnell of St. Petersburg, was recently promoted to her current rank. She served with the 3rd Infantry at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga., and is currently serving as an automated logistics specialist with the Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 18th Medcom in Seoul, Korea. She is a 1998 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Laura Therese Shumaker, daughter of Therese and Bill Shumaker of St. Petersburg, was recently promoted to her current rank. She is a cryptologic technician and is stationed in San Antonio, Texas. She is a 1997 graduate of Northeastern High School.

Army Pvt. Sean Davis, son of Sandra and Mark Morawski of St. Petersburg, recently graduated from Army Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and is currently in advanced training for electronic warfare systems with the Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. He is a 2002 graduate of the Canterbury School of Florida.

Navy Hospitalman Recruit Jennifer I. Simmons, daughter of Irma and William S. Simmons of St. Petersburg, recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill., and has been assigned to the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville. She is a 2002 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School.
