Teacher, civic activist dies at 102By CRAIG BASSE, Times Obituaries Editor© St. Petersburg Times published April 24, 2003 ST. PETERSBURG -- On a fall day in 1926, as St. Petersburg High School opened the doors at its current location on Fifth Avenue N, arriving students braved rain-soaked grounds to meet a new teacher, Esther M. Ulrich. Mrs. Ulrich, who would teach Latin and English, recalled the historic day in a 1985 interview: "They'd finished the building but they hadn't finished the grounds, and we had a lot of rain. We had to jump over the water on boards to get in the front door." Known as the "Queen Mum" of St. Petersburg, Mrs. Ulrich went on to lead civic causes that included the Florence Crittenton Home for Unwed Mothers, now Brookwood, a young women's residence. With her husband, Max, she operated Max Ulrich Real Estate. She sold real estate until she was 88. Mrs. Ulrich, the mother of former Mayor Robert L. Ulrich, died Tuesday (April 22, 2003) at home. She was 102. Survivors include three sons, Robert L. "Bob" and Richard G. "Dick," both of St. Petersburg, and Max, Orangeburg, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at John S. Rhodes, East Chapel, 635 Fourth St. N. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. -- Information from Times files was used in this obituary.
