LAKELAND - A 13-year-old girl died after the three-wheel all-terrain vehicle she was driving hit a hole and threw her off.
Olivia Hernandez was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead Thursday, said Michal Shanley, spokeswoman for the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Shanley said Olivia, a seventh-grader at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, was riding the three-wheeler in a dried retention pond near her home.
The ATV hit a hole in the ground, and Olivia was thrown off the vehicle.
Shanley didn't know whether Olivia was wearing a helmet.
Three-wheel ATVs have not been made since 1988 because of their poor safety record.
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission is looking into whether children under 16 should use all-terrain vehicles made for adults.
