Sound bites

Observations from the Sunshine Network broadcast

When Fredrik Modin's second-period goal was disallowed, analyst Bobby "The Chief" Taylor threw a fit. Yes, he's a Lightning broadcaster, but he didn't have to be so obvious about it, saying the call was "a travesty. I can't believe it. ... It's unbelievable how (officiating) can be this bad in a Stanley Cup playoff game." Modin told broadcaster Mike Nabors after the period: "There's nothing you can do about it. We just have to put it behind us and go from there." Taylor didn't; he brought it up in the third. Sunshine Network's cameras had excellent replays of Modin's non-goal, which might have left you wondering if he intentionally kicked the puck.

We never saw a replay of the third-period diving (Devils) and hooking (Lightning) penalties, the cameras seemed to lose the puck once in a while and again Sunshine's telecast didn't seem as bright and crisp as ESPN's have been.

Taylor pointed out that Devils goalie Martin Brodeur "will give you a rebound. ... The Lightning have to fight their way through (the trapping defense) to try and get those second and third chances, and that's probably the only way they're going to beat him." ... Taylor and play-by-play announcer Rick Peckham mentioned John Grahame was starting in place of Nikolai Khabibulin but didn't overdo it. Nabors reported coach John Tortorella said, "You guys (the media) will have a ball with this if we lose." They did; we won't.
