Baldelli is easy pick for top rookie

DETROIT - It comes as little surprise, but it still is a big deal.

Devil Rays centerfielder Rocco Baldelli was named Friday as the American League rookie of the month for April. That caps what has been a smashing debut for the 21-year-old who was playing at Class A one year ago.

Baldelli set what is believed to be a major-league rookie record with 40 hits through April. He hit .364 with a homer and 20 RBIs.

He finished April as the AL rookie leader in 12 offensive categories and in outfield assists.

Baldelli is the first Ray to win rookie of the month honors.
