PUNTA GORDA - Former major-leaguer Ozzie Canseco, twin of former Devil Ray Jose Canseco, was arrested Thursday after police said they found an illegal anabolic steroid in his vehicle during a traffic stop on I-75.
Ozzie Canseco, 38, also was charged with driving with a revoked license and possession of drug paraphernalia after a Charlotte County sheriff's deputy stopped him because the windows in his Lincoln Navigator were tinted darker than the law allows, sheriff's spokesman Bob Carpenter said.
He was released from the Charlotte County jail Friday afternoon after posting a $25,000 bond, Carpenter said. A call to his last known attorney was not immediately returned.
Ozzie Canseco, who listed a Broward County address, is on probation stemming from a 2001 nightclub brawl in Miami Beach that also resulted in charges against his twin. Ozzie pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor battery and had so far complied with his probation terms. The Miami-Dade County prosecutor's office did not immediately return a call to see how Thursday's arrest would affect Canseco's probation.
ALL-STAR CHANGE: Dusty Baker won't change how he manages the NL squad just because it could affect the World Series.
Players agreed to a two-year experiment Thursday that will give homefield advantage in the World Series to the team from the league that wins the All-Star Game. But Baker said that won't be a factor in any of his decisions, even if his Cubs still are in first place in mid July.
"If there's a game, I don't care who I'm playing, I might as well win," Baker said. "If I'm playing you or my son, I don't care. I'm here to win."
BURNETT CONTROVERSY: A.J. Burnett's agent says the Marlins need to conduct an internal inquiry to determine who knew what and when regarding the health of the right-hander, out for the season after elbow surgery.
"We should find out the truth," agent Darek Braunecker said, "And more important, the Florida Marlins should find out the truth."
Thursday Burnett said he had heard a rumor that management withheld information about his elbow from him and manager Jeff Torborg. General manager Larry Beinfest, angry and emphatic, said the rumor was outrageous and untrue.
ASTROS: Shortstop Adam Everett returned to the lineup in place of Julio Lugo, dropped from the roster a day earlier after he was charged with assault for punching his wife.
BRAVES: AOL Time Warner Inc., which has buyers for two of its teams, has hired New York investment bank Allen & Co. to help sell Atlanta. ... Outfielder Gary Sheffield will miss at least two games while attending a funeral in Chicago.
ORIOLES: DH David Segui is expected to come off the 15-day disabled list today, and Baltimore probably will place right-hander Rodrigo Lopez on the DL with a strained muscle in his side.
YANKEES: Shortstop Derek Jeter expects to take batting practice for the first time Sunday during his rehabilitation from a dislocated left shoulder. ... Bench coach Don Zimmer was hospitalized with a mild gastrointestinal problem. He is expected to be released in two to three days. ...
