The Lecanto girls qualified a pair of individual runners and a relay team for the Class 3A state meet at Thursday's region meet. The state meet will be held May 16 at the University of Florida's Percy Beard Stadium in Gainesville.
In the 400 meters, freshman Tara Haddock finished in third in 1:01:19 and teammate Nicole Gasiorek was fourth in 1:01:52.
"It was amazing, I ran the race of my life," Haddock said.
Haddock and Gasiorek contributed to the qualifying girls 4x800 relay, which finished third in a school-record 10:03:9. Deirdra Witherspoon and Amy Rundio were also part of that relay.
"We had to run against so many teams we've not seen at all this year," Witherspoon said. "We wanted to go so bad."
Senior Stacey Lowe finished fifth in the 100 hurdles, just missing a qualifying spot.
The Lecanto girls placed 11th out of 26 teams with a score of 21.25 points. First place went to Rockledge with 86 points, and host Astronaut was second.
The Lecanto boys finished 24th out of 26 teams with one point.
