SEATTLE - Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in New York's 10-run third and Jason Giambi later had a three-run shot as the Yankees beat the Mariners 16-5 Thursday night.
David Wells, 12 days shy of his 40th birthday, improved to 5-0 for the first time in his career. The Yankees took two of three from Seattle in a matchup of division leaders, just as they did last week in New York.
The powerful Yankees lineup had 17 hits and set a season high for runs.
Erick Almonte added a two-run double in the third as the Yankees scored 10 in an inning for the first time since Sept. 25, 1996, in the first game of a doubleheader against Milwaukee.
The Mariners allowed their most runs at Safeco Field, beating the mark of 15 on Aug. 15, 2000, against Detroit.

The Yankees battered Freddy Garcia, who went in with a 4-1 career record and 2.63 ERA against New York. He seemed ready to improve those numbers after retiring six of his first seven batters.
That's when everything unraveled for the Mariners.
New York erased a 3-0 deficit with seven hits in the third, sending 13 batters to the plate. Garcia was replaced after Almonte's two-run double gave the Yankees an 8-3 lead, and Soriano greeted reliever Julio Mateo with a 373-foot homer to right.
Soriano singled earlier in the inning and scored twice. Raul Mondesi singled, walked and scored twice.
Garcia hit Giambi with a pitch to load the bases, then walked Bernie Williams on a 3-and-2 count to force home a run.
Nick Johnson, Hideki Matsui and Robin Ventura hit run-scoring singles in the inning. Jorge Posada had a run-scoring groundout, and another run scored on a throwing error by centerfielder Mike Cameron.
A'S 8, WHITE SOX 5: Miguel Tejada had a three-run homer among his three hits and John Halama pitched into the seventh inning for host Oakland.
Eric Chavez also homered and Ramon Hernandez and Erubiel Durazo had run-scoring doubles as the A's beat Chicago for the fourth time in six games over the past 10 days. Six players drove in runs as Oakland won for the 10th time in 13 games.
ANGELS 7, INDIANS 1: Garret Anderson tied a career high with seven RBIs, including a grand slam, and Anaheim sent Cleveland to its ninth straight road loss.
Anderson's sixth career slam helped the Angels complete a three-game sweep after they were swept in three last weekend at Toronto. The Indians, who have lost 12 of 14, also were swept at Seattle and Oakland in late April.
BLUE JAYS 8, RANGERS 6: Shannon Stewart hit a three-run homer for his 1,000th career hit as visiting Toronto overcame Rafael Palmeiro's 499th home run. Palmeiro led off the eighth with his ninth home run of the season a week after hitting his previous one.
ORIOLES AT ROYALS, PPD.: The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. today after storm trackers spotted a tornado about 50 miles from Kauffman Stadium.
