Gators rally for victory in SEC tourney opener

PLANT CITY - Florida won its first SEC tournament game since 2000, beating South Carolina 6-2.

Kristen Butler went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Jenny Gladding (21-12) struck out seven and allowed five hits in a complete game.

Down 2-0 in the third, Florida scored four runs. Mylin Prieto's single scored Jackie Marchetta to make it 2-1. Gladding followed with a single to bring home Jennifer Brown. One out later, Mandy Schuerman's double gave Florida a 4-2 lead.

The Gators play Georgia, which beat Mississippi State, 3-0, at 8 tonight. In other games, LSU beat Tennessee 1-0 in nine innings and Alabama beat Auburn 4-0. Tennessee faces Auburn at noon today followed by South Carolina against Mississippi State at 2 and LSU against Alabama at 6.

Meanwhile, Gladding, Prieto and Lindsey Cameron were voted to the all-SEC first team. Gladding entered Thursday's game with a 1.41 ERA and 11 home runs. Prieto leads the Gators with a .343 batting average. Cameron is second at .312. Also, outfielder Jenilee Garner was named to the Academic All-District III team.

USF: The Bulls beat Houston 1-0 behind Leigh Ann Ellis' one-hitter and Holly Groves' home run to advance to the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament in Houston. USF faces DePaul at 5 p.m. today.

FLORIDA STATE: Senior outfielder Shandra Colzie was selected to the Academic All-American all-region team. Colzie, an elementary education major, has a 3.64 grade point average and a .327 batting average. The Seminoles begin the ACC tournament today in Tallahassee.
